Steve Ogle, ébéniste studio

Sculpture and Fine Art Furniture

Steve Ogle, a master furniture maker and designer, established ébéniste studio in 1999. Since 2006, ébéniste studio has produced more fine art sculpture than furniture. See these unique artworks at www.ebenistestudio.com.

For his Studio Line, Ogle incorporates contemporary design forms with traditional decorative methods and materials. In them you can see his attraction to rustic and inconsistent appearances… the patina of aging surfaces. Natural materials age beautifully, inconsistently.

The pieces are designed to change with age, to weather and warm, gathering an emotional quality like an antique. Rusted metal can be beautiful and warm, as can wood which has been touched or walked upon hundreds of thousands of times.

How can opposites be presented and allowed to enhance each other? What about the interaction of positive and negative space in the piece? Is there a feeling of proportion and visual weight in the design? Experimenting with these ideas has allowed Ogle to find remarkably beautiful results.

“My process is about decorating our indoor surroundings with the beautiful inconsistencies we all appreciate when we look out at nature. The so-called ‘imperfections’ and individual characteristics of the materials, and the effects of our interactions with them over time, are what make a piece beautiful."
